A First Glimpse

Several of you asked to see pics of our new home. Though I've wanted to show you, I'm a bit of a perfectionist.

I kept putting it off until I had at least one room completely done. We've lived here now for almost 4 months and I still don't have a single room completed.

After talking with a friend on Facebook Friday, I decided it was time to show you what our house looks like today :) There are many, many things I want to do with it. We have and are chipping away at the list of changes. Realistically, though, it will be a long time before the house is just the way I want it.

When we were in Odenton, our place seemed to take shape rather quickly. When we left, after 2 years there, it seemed I'd just gotten it the way I wanted it. Organized, comfortable, homey, our style...the work of daily living just seemed to flow. It seems clear this house will take longer than that.

This is just a first little glimpse of a part of the house. It's one little area that I'm treating like a room for both function and design. Where I grew up, we called it the Entry Hall, but some people call it a Foyer:

The front door has narrow windows flanking each side of the door. We love all of the light that comes through the windows, but we hung curtains for privacy. I took all of the pictures at night or else you'd see that these curtains are sheers.

As you can see from this photo, the area is somewhat large and needed something. I bought a bench with cube storage underneath since Matt leaves for work each day through the front door. This gives him a place to gather all of his things I lay out for him to take to work (coffee travel mug, lunch bag, briefcase, etc.). He also puts on his work boots using this bench.

I plan to hang something on the wall above the bench, but haven't gotten to it yet. I have something that I think will look really good and will fill in the empty space on the wall, but I have the feeling it may throw off proportions. Then, I'll need a little side table next to the bench, with a lamp and bauble to offset the visual imbalance. I have seen a table that would be perfect with the color scheme etc., but that means more money spent and I'm trying to prioritize. So, it's not that I can't finish this room; it's that I'm not sure I should try to make this space pretty when it's already functional and other things need attention.

We also need a little something on the wall to the right (that's the wall alongside our staircase). I may put a little entry table there too. Lastly, I bought two storage cubes to go under the bench. They are slightly too tall to fit, but I've been working on altering them to fit. I altered bins before when we were in Odenton and they turned out great. The bins will provide attractive storage and add dimension since the bins are lighter in color than the bench.

If you're a little late to the show, I love decorating. It's fun for me to study a space, visualize what it could look like, and hunt around online and in stores to find the exact item that makes it work. I hesitated to show you this area now because in my view it doesn't "work" yet. The extra little pieces that will tie it all together aren't in place. All in good time though.

'Tis true that you may not appreciate my taste at all; that I understand. Nonetheless, I love making our house our home.
