This was not a smart move on my part. I plugged up the sink to run a little warm water to thaw some frozen seafood for dinner. Matt was due to be home soon, so I was dashing around finishing the last few things I could accomplish before he walked in the door.
I had a coat and scarf to hang in the closet upstairs, so I hurried to put them in their place before his arrival. There wasn't quite enough water in the sink yet, so I let it run thinking I'd be right back.
Yes. You guessed it. Quickly distracted I became.
I tried to find a better place to put my scarves and gloves for easy access. I had another coat in the bedroom I needed to hang. Then I heard the dryer cut off and pulled out the clothes to fold. I heard something that sounded funny...like I'd left a burner on at the stove, but I knew I hadn't. I went on and folded the clothes in the spare bedroom, returned a call to my Dad (placing him on speaker phone while I worked), went upstairs to put the clothes away and then heard Matt calling.
"Kim, we've got a problem." Matt had arrived home...
Misunderstanding what he said was the problem, I hurriedly hung up with Dad, tossed down the clothes basket and raced downstairs...only to find a river where my kitchen once had been.
Matt was sweet and understanding. No hidden tension. No aggravation. Genuine understanding.
I was devastated.
Matt went upstairs to get towels to help me as I began sopping it all up with the kitchen towels that were close at hand. Let me say, those little towels didn't touch it.
Matt and I worked for who knows how long sopping it all up and removing all the wet things from the kitchen drawers to dry on towels laid around the living room. Yes, you got it. Water. Inside all the drawers and cabinets near the sink.
Discouraged. That would be a good word to describe it. We wouldn't be able to go to the gym as planned. We had to do emergency clean up. I couldn't easily cook dinner since all of my pots and pans needed to be washed after the "waterfall."
We ordered pizza and Matt picked it up. We left everything out to air out overnight and I spent the entire day following rewashing everything and putting it all back in it's place. I didn't get anything else done. What a mess.
What? You want to see. Ok. Here you go:
These pics are of the water trail left when the soaking towels were taken upstairs and deposited in the guest bathroom tub.
If you can't tell from this shot, this is about two full laundry loads of towels used to sop up the mess.
