Although I knew Jenny was due to be out this way, I didn't know exactly when and I wasn't sure she'd have time to meet up. When I got a text on Tuesday, I changed plans and took a road trip to see her on Wednesday.
She was flying into DC and staying in Alexandria, VA without a car. When she said she wasn't sure I'd want to make the hour trip to see her, I laughed thinking of how much more reasonable a one hour drive is than a 15 hour drive home! No problem.
When I lived in Tennessee, we lived in the same small town outside the city. I was spoiled then. It was only about a 3 minute drive door to door. We often made last minute plans to grab dinner at one of our favorite local restaurants and we'd talk the night away. She's a night owl like me.
Once not one, but two local police officers checked on us because we were talking in the parking lot after dinner so late that everything was closed. The patrolman on both shifts caught us standing there gabbing away and even checked Jenny's license to prove her story that we lived in town!
On this visit, we went to Old Town Alexandria. After walking around for a little bit, we enjoyed sitting outside the rest of the day catching up. From the outdoor cafe at Starbucks to the riverside deck at Chart House, we enjoyed taking it all in and relaxing for a casual day with a friend.
When I came home and told Matt all about it, he told me he was jealous I've visited a place he hasn't seen. Alexandria may make it on our list for fun day trips.
It was a great day, a welcome hiatus.
